MotioninJoy and creating a custom profile

Some games don't support joysticks, but yet you want to use the PS3 controller with those games.
With a custom profile in MotioninJoy's DS3 Tool, you can map keyboards keys or even the mouse to the buttons and axises on your PS3 controller.
This guide will show you how to do this step by step.

Before you start, make sure:

Before you start this guide, make sure of the stuff below with your game:

  • If your game already supports joysticks, use the game's control options to set up your controller with the game.
  • Some games require Xbox 360 controllers, namely popular FPS games, as that is all they are programmed to recognize. If you have one of these games try out the Xbox 360 controller emulator profile in the DS3 Tool.
You can see what games we've noticed require a Xbox 360 controller in the x360 compatibility list, or you can check your game's manual or control options to see if a Xbox 360 controller is mentioned.

Step 1: Create the profile

Start by opening the DS3 Tool and click Create next to the “Custom” option.

You will now be on the Create Custom Profile page.

Yes, this page looks awfully confusing with all the menus, but it's really straightforward.
In each row of the page here, the picture on the far left shows what button/axis of the controller you are configuring.
The left menu lets you configure what the button/axis will do (such as be a button, axis, keyboard key, mouse axis, etc), and the right menu lets you adjust the values that the selected option on the left menu allows.

Below are some sample configurations you can follow along with to get the hang of making a custom profile.

Button configuration

to be written later

Axis configuration

Alright, let's say you are configuring a custom profile for a racing game, and you want the triggers (L2 and R2) to be on separate axises so you can have separate gas and brake functions.

  1. Click on the left menu in the L2 row and click on “Gamepad axis”.
  2. In the right menu on the row you can then select which axis to use. Make sure to pick a axis that isn't being used elsewhere in the profile, and select and click on that axis.
If you need help remembering what the default button/axis configuration is, look at the end of the FAQ.
Note that each axis is separated into axis Positive and axis Negative. If you wanted to use the same axis for the triggers here, you could set one trigger to positive, and the other to negative, but here we are using separate axises for the triggers.
  3. Here I chose to use the Dial Positive axis as the axis for L2.
  4. Now for R2, Click on the left menu in the R2 row and click on “Gamepad axis”.
  5. In the right menu on the row, select a different axis than what you used for L2. In this case I chose Slider Positive.

Keyboard Key configuration

Alright, lets say you are configuring a custom profile for a FPS game that doesn't support controllers, only the keyboard.

First you'll want to use the left stick to move your avatar/character right? Usually in PC FPS games, the keys “W A S D” are used to move your character, so here we'll map the left stick to these keys so the left stick will move your character.

  1. First let's start with the “W” key. Find the row in the page that shows the left stick pointing up (marked by “L” with an arrow pointing up).
  2. Click on the left menu and click on “Keystrokes”.
  3. Click on the right menu, then click on the “W” key on the keyboard that appears.
  4. Now right below the left stick up row is the left stick right row, Repeat steps 2 & 3 using this row, this time clicking on the “D” key.
  5. Right below the left stick right row is the left stick down row, Repeat steps 2 & 3 using this row, this time clicking on the “S” key.
  6. Right below the left stick down row is the left stick left row, Repeat steps 2 & 3 using this row, this time clicking on the “A” key.

Step 2: Save and Enable it

Now that you created your profile, you need to save it.

  1. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. A save dialog box will appear.
  2. Give your profile a name in the Name box, and then click Save. In this case I chose to name my profile 'test'.
  3. Now that your profile is saved, you need to enable it to use it in your game. Click the Enable button at the bottom of the page, or in the profile select page choose Custom, and select your profile, then click Enable.

Step 3: Test the profile

Now that your profile is created, saved, and enabled, you need to test to make sure your profile settings are working correctly. If the settings aren't working correctly, choose different settings for whatever isn't working in the Custom profile, then Save, Enable, and test again until it works right. Most likely you will have some trial-and-error in working with your custom profile, but eventually it will work.
